ALL SCIENCE CHALLENGE PARENT LETTER & CONSENT TO PARTICIPATE
March 5, 2011
Dear Families,
Your child has expressed the desire to be on the Bedford South School Science Team and has agreed to participate in the All Science Challenge to be held at Dalhousie University on Wednesday, May 2nd. This is a competition all about science and technology where teams from across the Halifax Regional School Board will be competing against each another. This is a national competition; however, this is the first year that the competition is being held in Halifax.
Bedford South School has registered five teams, each consisting of four students in grades six through eight. Each student will be responsible for studying two of the eight chapters in the All Science Handbook and becoming an expert on those two chapters. The information in the handbook is not aligned with the curriculum and is an enrichment opportunity for your student. You will notice that the material covered is quite complex and your student has already committed to studying this material outside of school time. Every student has been given a copy of the chapters that he/she has been assigned.
We will provide the opportunity for teams to meet every Monday to review the material, ask questions, and prepare for the Design Challenge as a team. The Design Challenge is a hands-on problem-solving task that teams of four students will do together. Each team will be given a task to accomplish and a limited amount of materials and time to accomplish that task. Teams will then be judged on how successfully they accomplish the task, how effectively they used the materials, and how well they worked together as a team. To be adequately prepared for this challenge, you student must commit to regular studying and practice. Students can visit the All Science Website at http://www.letstalkscience.ca/challenge.html where new practice questions will be posted each week.
As we get closer to the Competition Date we will be in touch to finalize arrangements to get the students to Dalhousie. Carpooling and chaperones may be required. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.
